How To Attach Saw Blade To Tree Pruner

Maintaining a beautiful yard is all fun and games until it’s time to trim those high tree branches.

Although that didn’t look like much of a challenge with a ladder and a saw, I knew it was a risky task. More so when last month, I almost lost my balance while getting rid of dead branches. That’s when my husband got me a tree pruner... of course, after giving me an earful.

I must admit that these pruners are much easier and convenient, especially if you invest in a telescopic one. I haven’t used a ladder since then, and I don’t think I ever will!

However, since there are different varieties of tree pruners available on the market, a single device may not be sufficient. So, what will you do? Buy multiple pruners suitable for various tree-trimming tasks? Not at all because I’ve got you covered with this DIY guide on how to attach saw blade to tree pruner.

Howdy! I’m Stacy Smith, and I’m going to talk about the different types of tree pruners and how you can make the most of a single device. So, without any more delay, let’s get started.

A Brief Guide On Tree Pruners

The Function Of A Tree Pruner

A tree pruner or pole pruner is built to trim and cut hard-to-reach, high branches without a ladder. Similar to loppers but better, this device is sufficiently long and cuts through branches having a circumference of about 6 inches. On the other hand, pruning saws can chop much thicker branches.

As the names suggest, a pruning saw uses its blade to saw wood while a pruner snips off branches. Depending on your needs, you can select the perfect tree pruner from the categories below.

Types Of Tree Pruners

1. Traditional Pole Tree Pruners

This tree pruner is equipped with an adjustable pole and a curved blade that cuts efficiently with its sharp teeth even when the pole is at its maximum length. While it may require some effort since you’ll be engaged in a sawing motion, it is a great tool for cutting branches as thick as 8 inches.

Most brands offer changeable heads with a traditional pole tree pruner. So, you can use it as a typical pruner or a saw. Plus, some pruners offer a combo head with both types of cutters in one unit.

2. Electric Pole Chainsaws

Donning a detachable pole, these chainsaws are perfect for pruning trees as high as 15 feet. Also, they can tackle thicker branches of up to 6 inches in diameter with ease. Since these devices are a bit heavier, you must refrain from climbing a ladder side by side. Remember- your safety comes first!

Moreover, despite being essential for areas with heavy vegetation, beginners might want to steer clear of such tree pruners.

3. Ropeless Pole Tree Pruners

Lightweight and user-friendly, these pole pruners are perfect for taming thinner branches. Typically used for cutting through twigs with a diameter of 1 inch or smaller, you can also use this device on large shrubs.

All you have to do is raise the pruner and stick the hook over the desired branch. Hold the pruner with your non-dominant hand and use the other to pull at the bottom and produce a scissoring mechanism. Once you’re done, just release the pressure and lower the pruner.

4. Electric Pole Trimmers

With this device, you can enjoy the best of both hedge trimmers and pole pruners. However, unlike the traditional hedge trimmers, the blade of this device is right at the end for better reach. Most of these trimmers can extend up to 8 feet, while the sharp edge can be locked on the branch, allowing you to trim with precision.

Available in both corded and cordless versions, it is best to limit yourself to tall hedges and large shrubs while using these trimmers. Since they cannot reach very tall tree branches and are pretty heavy, I do not recommend mounting a ladder while using them.

How To Attach Saw Blade To Tree Pruner

Depending on the type of tree pruner you use, you might want to change the blades occasionally. It could either be to replace an old blade or to interchange between different blades for more versatility. Regardless, attaching a saw blade to a tree pruner is no rocket science, and here’s how you can do it easily.

Step 1

Use a wrench to loosen the bolts of the pole shank. In case of rust, you can spray some lubricant, and the bolts should be free in no time.

Step 2

Remove the existing blade and keep it aside safely. In case of an old blade, wrap it in newspaper before disposal. Old bolts can be cleaned for later use.

Step 3

Slide the new blade into the pole shank, where the old blade was fitted. Secure it in place by screwing in the bolts and ensure it is tightened sufficiently.

How To Attach Lopper Blades

Here’s an alternative for those who prefer using loppers instead. Although their function is slightly different from a typical tree pruner, it is a common device used for yard maintenance. Thus, I decided to cover it as well for your convenience.

Step 1

Place the pole on a flat surface and uninstall the return spring. Check for any damage and replace it if necessary.

Step 2

If the pulley base is affixed with the blade, remove it along with the old bolts and the blade itself. Clean all of these parts thoroughly before storage or disposal.

Step 3

Slide the new blade through the head with its sharp side facing the front. Secure it tightly with new bolts and reinstall the pulley base and spring.

Conclusion

And that’s all for today, folks!

I hope my guide will help you use your tree pruner more efficiently without spending on multiple devices and parts. Here’s a pro tip before I leave- sharpen and oil your pruners and saws regularly for smooth, precise cuts each time. A little bit of maintenance and care goes a long way towards ensuring the durability of your tools.
