How To Hang Christmas Lights Inside

Christmas is one of the major holidays in a year, and the house needs to be decorated before it arrives. However, this can be a daunting task.

I can understand the amount of hard work that goes behind this decoration. In fact, my husband and I used to struggle every year while hanging the lights inside the house. Thankfully, this year my old friend Christine came over to show me how to do it the right way. And that is when I decided to share her knowledge with you.

Hi! I’m Stacy Smith, and this is my comprehensive guide which talks about how to hang Christmas lights inside. I have broken it down into steps that you can follow, along with some tips to remember.

Without further ado, it’s time to dive in.

Steps To Planning Out How To Hang Christmas Lights

1. Attaching Cup Hooks Around The House

Cup hooks are used to keep the lights in place, and they are cheaper than hooks meant for hanging lights. These may not look very pretty but are stylish enough to do the job. Here, it’s important to ensure that they have been placed around the house and on both sides of track lighting. In the case of corners, attach lights on both sides so that they can easily be hung in a straight line.

2. Checking And Looping The Strands

Next, you will have to loop the strands on to the cup hooks. I will suggest that you check each one and attach them to a power source before looping. If any of them do not light up, you can discard those at the beginning itself.

Once all the strands are checked, plug one to the nearest power source and begin looping it through your closest cup hook. If you plug one side, you will know exactly how much the strands can extend and where to stop.

Once you have hung a few strands, you can unplug them temporarily until needed. Continue hanging the rest of them, letting them hang comfortably over the cup hooks. I suggest you maintain continuity while you are doing it. That means trying to make sure that there is no gap in between strands in any particular room; one should be immediately followed by another.

3. Plugging Them Right

Here, each strand needs to be attached to the socket the previous one. This has to be done for every strand so that they can be put together to create a longer rope of lights. Usually, I'm not too fond of the extra lengths of these strands that might look out of place. So, better use a rubber band or a hair tie in such a case to fasten the extra length and tug it behind.

4. Using Packaging Tape

There are areas where cup hooks cannot be attached. Usually, these are tight or narrow places that also need support. That’s why Christine asked me to use packaging tape for such cases. Cup hooks might make the lights hang in a weird way, and that may not look good in such areas.

But packaging tape can be attached at every place where the strand needs support. In case you’re doing just that, I recommend using transparent or white ones as these are not very visible.

I would like to add a word of caution here: sometimes, these tapes might harm your wallpaper or wall colors. Ensure that the tape can easily be removed from the wall before you actually put it up in places. Otherwise, please attach it to any wooden surfaces or windows.

5. Choosing The Colors

Colors play a crucial role while putting up Christmas lights. While you may have different colored lights, it is always better to stick to a theme. You can choose 2-3 of your favorite colors and use them all around the house.

With Christmas, I usually stick to warm lighting. You can pair up warm white or plain white with red to enhance the Christmassy feeling. Also, blue and white pairing is a great idea as that would reflect winter.

Tips To Remember

Christine suggested that I buy lights from one brand only, and they should be of the same size as that will help me estimate the total rope length. Also, it’s better to choose longer strands instead of shorter ones as they will cover a larger area at once.

Next, it is best not to choose icicle lights because they are difficult to handle and remove, and may leave marks on the walls. They can also prove problematic for those walking under or beside them.

Also, when decorating, Christine advised that the lights on the Christmas tree should be kept separate from those which are used for interior decoration. Otherwise, if you decide to move the tree a little, the lights all around your house will get disturbed.

Finally, when you are calculating the time that would be required for putting up the lights, keep at least one hour for every room. It might seem like a lot now, but when you get to work with the hooks and then the lights, it could be quite time-consuming.

Final Words

While you are doing the hard work by yourself, it is also important to lift the mood. So, Christine and I decided to play some Christmas songs while at work. Turn up the music or the radio and listen to something that you like. After all, it’s a fun occasion you’re preparing for, and the process should not be boring.

As an additional measure, pair up your Christmas lights with suitable decor. Your decor elements should match the colors of your lights, lifting up the ambiance. Also, be careful with the windows and see to it that none of the lights obstruct their operation.

With this, I have come to the end of this article. Let me know how you are setting up the Christmas lights this year.

Until next time.
