How To Install Tile Outside Without Concrete

Laying tiles is a time-consuming process, and it is even more difficult when they have to be installed on soil or dirt.

Hi! I’m Stacy, and I’ll tell you how to make this process easier. As a gardening enthusiast, I’ve spent quite a lot of time outdoors. At my age, many might be of the opinion that an old dog can’t learn new tricks.

But, I was spending time with my friend Meaghan and had a chance to observe her husband laying out the tiles. Thinking to myself that it doesn’t look impossible, I decided it would be best to lend a helping hand. While Meaghan couldn’t figure out why I was so interested in the process, you are likely to be thankful for the tricks I picked up by observing and assisting.

Now, I’ve prepared a detailed guide for you, so that there aren’t any troubles even as a first-timer. Before I begin, I’d suggest that you familiarize yourself with some handy tools before plunging into the process of laying tiles.

With that out of the way, let’s get to the details.

Why Lay Tiles On Dirt?

The first time I observed Meaghan’s husband undertake the tough task of laying tiles on dirt, I asked myself why he wouldn’t use something like concrete or cement. Basically, using dirt makes the tiles more maneuverable, and it creates less mess. You can also take the tiles apart more easily.

Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible if the materials were more permanent. As a gardening enthusiast, the benefit immediately became clear to me. I love maintaining a good yard and garden and laying tiles seem like a great way to spruce things up.

Understandably, this can be tricky, but with some expertise, homeowners can carry out this task.

Where to Lay Tiles Outside?

You have to first make sure that you end up with a firm and solid bed. Ultimately, this is where the tiles will sit and stick to. I’ve found that dirt usually makes for the best bed if you’re laying tiles outside. An added benefit is that dirt makes for a very affordable choice.

On the other hand, you can also lay tiles on sand, which is considered easier because sand is finer than dirt. But, I’ve found that gravel can make the process of installation harder. Thus, you’d be advised to clear any gravel or rocks that might be in the way. Then, begin with a layer of fine dirt, and witness how easy the entire process becomes.

How to Prepare the Surface?

Meaghan’s husband was also nice enough to show me how to prepare the surface after choosing the right option. The first step is to clear as much area as you can.

I assisted in using a brush to remove most of the gravel. Meanwhile, he used his hands to take out rocks that were large and obtrusive. Obviously, this would interrupt the uniformity of the base. I have to warn first-timers that this can be an exhausting task and will require some stamina.

After you’ve managed to clear the surface and make it as uniform as possible, you have to spread a layer of dirt or sand over the entire area where you want to install the tiles. I’ve discovered that the optimum thickness is around half an inch, as it allows for the maximum grip.

It definitely helps if you dampen the dirt or sand with a light spray of water. The entire bed becomes more malleable and helps in setting the tiles down more securely. Of course, the next step needs you to flatten the bed by making use of a hand tamper. Following this, a bladed screed will ensure that the bed is completely even.

During this process, you might find that the thickness has dipped below half an inch in some areas. Here, it is best to add more sand or dirt and then dampen it before going through the flattening process.

How to Lay the Tiles?

When it comes to actually laying the tiles, the process has to be executed with a degree of patience. First, lay one tile and try to stamp it into place. Meaghan’s husband suggested using a rubber mallet for the same. This tool applies an adequate amount of pressure while minimizing any risk of damaging the surface of the tiles. If you’re satisfied with the initial placement, you can then lay the rest of the tiles in the entire area.

Be sure to secure each one with a rubber mallet after you’ve placed it.

How to Finish the Installation Process?

You might think that just laying the tiles on the bed means you’ve finished the job. But, I’ve found that there’s more to the process. After the tiles are put in place, you have to fill the areas between them. The objective is to make sure that the surface remains as secure and smooth as possible.

The best way to go about it is to pour sand or dirt between the tiles. Work this loose material to fill the gaps. After that, you can use a brush to wipe away any excess dirt or sand you might not need.

Testing the Surface

The final step is to check whether you’ve successfully installed the tiles. You can do this by spraying some water on them with the help of your garden hose. Meaghan’s husband showed me how to dampen the entire area and then check the gaps.

If the sand or dirt comes away from between tiles, it means that they could come loose eventually. An easy fix is to take more dampened dirt or sand and work it into gaps. This secures the tiles in place and ensures that they’re fully packed.

Once the extra material is completely dry, you’ll be left with a beautifully tiled outdoor area.

Summing it Up

While the steps mentioned are quite clear, you just have to keep some things in mind. Make sure the bed is even and doesn’t have obstructions. Place the tiles exactly where you want them, and hammer them securely in place.

The tools used aren’t many, but you have to be careful not to damage the tiles. Check again if the fillings are tight enough. At the end of it all, it is physically exhausting but quite rewarding.

If you’ve got any other queries, do let me know. Until next time, take care!
