How To Keep Grass From Growing Around Trees

Grass can be a real nuisance to your trees; every time you try to remove them, they somehow find a way to grow back.

Moreover, weeds and grass are quick to grow and pretty stubborn to remove. So, what should you do to prevent them from growing around your trees?

Today I’m here to talk about how to keep grass from growing around trees in your garden.

Ways To Prevent Grass From Growing Around Trees

1. Lawn Maintenance

Proper lawn maintenance can help you keep grass from growing around trees by digging them away. But, be careful not to damage the roots of the tree while digging as they lie pretty close to the surface of the ground.

You can also try pouring some boiling water around the edges of the tree trunk to get rid of stray grass blades. Moreover, regularly mowing and trimming the edges can reduce grass growth to give your garden a refined look.

2. Edging

Putting up barriers around young trees can prevent grass from growing around them. You can choose brick, metal, vinyl, or brick to construct barriers around growing tree trunks to keep away the grass.

What’s more, edging can work really well for young and growing trees. But, it gets a bit difficult to build barriers around mature trees because of their large trunks and thick roots.

3. Applying Mulch

Another way to keep grass from growing around your trees is by covering the soil with mulch. It helps reduce the growth of grass and weeds, and you can either use natural or synthetic mulch since both will have the same effect.

But, try not to apply a dense layer of mulch on the soil around the tree. If the mulch layer is deeper than one or two inches, it might suffocate the tree and prevent its roots from getting proper nutrients, water, and oxygen from the soil.

4. Spraying Herbicide

Spraying potent herbicides is a good way to get rid of stubborn grass and weeds, preventing them from growing back. For instance, you can use glyphosate herbicide on the grass but be careful while spraying it as it can affect the young trees and leafy sprouts.

In contrast, I think it is better to spray sethoxydim or fusillade on the grass around your trees. These herbicides will help in killing the grass without harming the trees.

Final Thoughts

Grass and weeds can inhibit the proper growth of trees by feeding on their nutrients. So, you have to use the proper methods to keep grass from growing around the tree trunks.

You can use any of the methods that I’ve mentioned above to prevent grass growth. But, just be careful while getting rid of grass so that you don’t harm the young sprouting trees.

With that, I’ll sign off. Until next time!
