Your porch is the perfect spot for brunches, family gatherings, and game nights!
Rocking chairs, in particular, can be quite an attractive addition, enhancing comfort with their gentle back-and-forth motion. Since I spend a lot of time outdoors, I have placed a couple of chairs on the porch to enjoy a glass of lemonade on quiet afternoons or call neighbors over for tea.
On a particularly windy evening last fall, I noticed one of the chairs toppled over. Now, this was a common occurrence, one that I couldn’t control. However, constant tumbling of the chairs can damage them in the long run.
Even if you’re not bothered by rain or storm, securing your chairs can improve their longevity and prevent them from sliding away. I had to find a solution, and like always, the internet came to my rescue. Although there are several methods to lock down porch chairs, I’ve listed my favorites in this guide for you.
Hi there! I’m Stacy. And today, I’ll tell you all about how to lock down a porch rocking chair.
So, without further delay, let’s get started!
Locking Down A Porch Rocking Chair

1. Secure It With Bungee Cords
Purchase steel cables or bungee cords from your local hardware store. Then, wrap it snugly around your chair, securing different sections with it. Once that is done, tie the furniture to the railing or any other fixed object on your patio.
Doing this will make the chairs difficult to move as the elastic in the cord binds them together, thus protecting them from turbulent weather and even theft.
2. Anchor The Chair
Going one step further, you can also anchor the chairs to the patio or deck using stakes. This is not as easy as the other ways on this list and might require professional intervention. That said, it is a foolproof method of securing your patio furniture.
For this, you’ll have to purchase stakes from the local hardware store and then drill holes into the patio to place the anchor sleeve.
The anchor sleeve will hold the legs of the chair in place and stabilize it. The only drawback of this method is that moving the chairs around won’t be possible once you anchor them to the ground.
3. Rubber Stoppers
If you’re looking for temporary solutions to lock down your porch rocking chair, then using rubber stoppers is the best way to go.
Add two rubber stoppers on either side of the chair to keep it in place. This will stabilize the chair and create sufficient friction that’ll prevent it from rocking.
Alternatively, you can install rubber wedges under the arcs and secure the rocking chair in place.
4. Earthquake Gel
Initially created to stop glass from sliding off the table and shattering during earthquakes, this gel has found immense popularity among homeowners looking to lock down their porch furniture.
Place this clear gel on the base of the legs and secure the chairs to the ground. It works as an adhesive and is one of the most affordable solutions out there.
The only downside is that moving the chairs around will be difficult once you apply this gel since the adhesive is pretty strong. So, if you like to change the layout frequently, this method might not be ideal for you.
5. Sandbags Or Furniture Weights
Using sandbags is an old-school method of securing patio furniture in place. You can pick up a few sandbags from your local store and attach them to the chairs. However, the bags can tear open and leave your porch littered with sand.
To avoid this, use furniture weights instead. They work very well to hold down not just rocking chairs but all other patio furniture. Although they are filled with sand, the bags are tightly packed using tear-resistant material. Thus, chances of tearing or spilling are minimized.
Each of these bags can hold over 40 pounds of sand, and you can attach them to the chair legs using the accompanying hook-and-loop straps.
If you do not want to fasten the straps, simply place the bags on your chair as weights.
- Safely secure tents, canopies, and umbrellas with US Weight's 30 lb canopy weight set. Ideal for outdoor events, the interlocking design provides stability and prevents wind-related accidents.
- Prefilled Weights – Each of the four durable, plastic shells is prefilled with concrete, totaling 30 lbs for the set.
- No-Pinch design ensures hassle-free, safe installation and removal. No more pinched fingers when attaching or detaching the weights from your canopy or tent poles.
- 【Package Contain】The 4PCS photography sandbags come with 4 PCS aluminum clips and 8 PE sealed bags. Warm Tip: The sandbags are empty and not loaded with sand
- 【Excellent Craftsmanship】Aimosen sandbag is made of oxford fabric, which is wear-resistant and sturdy. The PVC coated oxford cloth lining can bring you a soft and smooth tactility experience. With the auxiliary products, the PE bag can prevent the sandbag from dust and the aluminum clip can help you fix the sandbag
- 【Dual Zippers Design】Each side of each sandbag has two opposite direction zipper. If you damage one zipper accidentally when you use, the dual zippers design can still make you use the sandbag normally
6. Stack The Furniture
If you have multiple rocking chairs on a porch, the best way to secure them is to stack one on top of the other. Piling the chairs this way adds weight to the overall set and prevents individual chairs from tumbling or blowing away when exposed to a powerful gust of wind.
Although this solution might not be a permanent one, it still holds your chairs in place while you figure out long-lasting solutions.
7. Invest In Heavier Furniture
There are different ways of securing your outdoor furniture. Although each of the methods I’ve listed already is quite effective, you can avoid the problem of chairs tumbling over altogether by choosing heavier furniture options.
Therefore, while looking for porch furniture, consider investing in solid wood, wrought iron, steel, or aluminum. These materials provide adequate comfort, which is your top priority, and their heavy weight holds down the chairs. Thus, you wouldn’t have to look for any other method to secure your porch rocking chairs.
However, since they are on the heavier side, you’ll have trouble moving them around. So, if you enjoy sprucing up your home décor from time to time by relocating furniture, I wouldn’t recommend buying heavy furniture.
Conclusion
That’s all, folks!
I hope this guide has been insightful, and you’re now well-versed with the most effective ways of locking down a porch rocking chair.
In addition to the methods I’ve listed in this guide, you can take a few precautionary measures to hold down the chairs, like tying cushions on them using velcro straps.
It’s essential to keep your patio furniture in a neat condition throughout. Covering them with a heavyweight furniture cover or bringing them indoors during stormy weather can help preserve their lifespan.
With that, I’ll take my leave. But, if you have any doubts or tips you’d like to share, let me know in the comments below.
Until next time, take care!
