I haven’t always been a fan of relaxing outdoors, so I never really found the need for having a patio on my lawn.
But since my father (the source from where I found my passion for gardening) used to be quick and useful with tools, I got to learn many skills from him. Out of the many things he has taught me, laying a patio on uneven ground is the one that stands out.
Now, even though I never had to lay a brick patio myself, I finally got the chance to use this specific skill when one of my neighbors was struggling with paving. He reached out to me for help, and I was more than happy to show him what to do.
And honestly, after seeing him completely install the brick patio on his uneven lawn, I was glad to have remembered the skill learned almost three decades ago.
Hi there! I’m Stacy Smith, your friendly lawn care expert. But today, instead of sharing tips on lawn care and garden maintenance, I’ve carefully created this guide to help you learn how to make a brick patio on uneven ground.
So, without further ado, let’s get going!
Steps To Make A Brick Patio On Uneven Ground
A brick patio can make any outdoor space stand out - I’m sure you agree!
Remember, the key to installing a patio is laying the bricks on an even base, but that doesn’t mean you need to give up on the idea if the ground is uneven. A bit of time and effort is all that’s required to transform the plot into a flat patio base.
Here, I’ve provided a step-by-step guide to help you install a brick patio on any uneven surface. So, let’s dive right into the details.
Step 1: Creating A Boundary
It’s crucial to designate the perimeter of the patio by spraying the area with a can of spray paint before laying the bricks or even leveling the ground. Once the plot’s marked, drive wooden stakes into each corner of the ground using a hammer.
Next, tie a piece of string to one of the stake’s bottom at ground level, wrapping it around each of the remaining stakes two to three times. You can then tie the end of the string to the first stake in order to create a boundary.
Step 2: Dig Up A Small Trench
Drive a shovel 2 inches into the ground, digging all the way around the site’s perimeter to create a trench. You can then move to the area inside and dig out 7 inches of the ground. After reaching an area that’s mounded up, remove more soil until the ground automatically appears even.
Step 3: Check If The Ground Is Even
Up next, you’ll have to check whether or not the ground is even. For this, place a long board over the top of the designated plot, resting either side on the ground. Determine the height from the board to the ground using a measuring tape, and dig out the areas that are too high.
Step 4: Covering The Site With Landscape Fabric
Here’s where the process of making the brick patio begins. Place a roll of landscape fabric on one side of the area and unroll it to the other side.
Make sure that the excess fabric is cut off with a utility knife. And keep laying additional rolls of fabric while overlapping each piece by 4 to 5 inches until the entire area is covered.
Step 5: Add Gravel & Sand
Once the designated area is covered, pour 3.5 inches of gravel and smoothen the layer with a rake. Keep hitting it using the base of a hand tamper for compacting, and check the site’s level yet again with the help of the long board before adding an inch of coarse sand on top.
Furthermore, smoothen the layer of sand and use a level in various locations to ensure there are no hills or dips.
Step 6: Laying Bricks On The Even Base
Now that you’ve prepared an even base for installing the patio, you’ll be able to easily lay bricks on top of the sand in any desired pattern. But make sure the edges of each brick are pressed against the nearest one as close as possible to prevent gaps.
Step 7: Laying Metal L-Shaped Edging
Don’t forget to lay metal L-shaped edgings around the perimeter of the patio after you’ve placed the bricks on the ground. Also, drive metal stakes through every fourth hole, making sure they extend into the ground.
Step 8: Final Touches To Complete The Brick Patio Installation
Last but not least, use the shovel to spread more sand evenly over the top of the bricks. And then push the excess sand in between the bricks with the help of a push broom. Finally, spray the bricks and sand with water to complete the installation process and secure the patio in place.
Summing It Up
A brick patio provides a perfect outdoor setting to enjoy barbecues and fun-filled get-togethers with family and friends. But laying bricks on an uneven surface will not give you the desired results.
In order to beautify your yard and extend the life of the patio, the first and most crucial step is to level the ground. And this isn’t really a complicated task. Making a brick patio on uneven ground is relatively simple, provided you’re equipped with the right tools and required set of ingenious skills.
And thanks to the valuable teachings of my father, I’ve been able to come forth with this step-by-step guide to help you out. On that note, I’ll now take your leave.
I’ll definitely be back with more such useful guides. Till then, feel free to reach out to me in case you’re in need of lawn care tips.
Take care and stay safe!
