How To Make A Grasshopper Trap

There is no denying that grasshoppers are a threat because they consume and clip parts of plants while feeding, damaging your garden.

That’s why you must know how to make a grasshopper trap and catch them before it gets too late. To help you, I have mentioned 4 innovative ways to make an effective grasshopper trap in this article.

So, let’s get straight to it without further delay.

4 Innovative Ways To Make A Grasshopper Trap

These are the ways you can make a Grasshopper trap:

1. Bottle Trap

For setting a bottle trap, you need to cut the top off a regular plastic bottle and re-insert it upside down into the opening. Next, tape it together and stuff it with grass before keeping it outside. Grasshoppers will enter the bottle easily through the funnel-like top, but they won’t be able to get back out.

2. Fuzzy Blanket Trap

This is another innovative way to trap a grasshopper, for which you need to set out a fuzzy blanket in your yard. Now, to draw grasshoppers to it, sprinkle some breadcrumbs on the blanket, or you can even spray it with sugar water.

Leave the trap outside overnight, allowing grasshoppers to move across the fuzzy blanket, owing to which their tiny legs will get caught in the fibers. And you can pick them up the next morning and collect them in a jar. You can also consider agitating the grass surrounding the blanket to encourage grasshoppers to jump on it to catch them easily.

3. Soapy Water Trap

An alternative for trapping grasshoppers on a wider scale is setting up a soapy water vessel in the yard with a pane of glass. Make sure that you set the pane of glass upright and in front of the vessel of soapy water. The grasshoppers will lunge at the glass, fall back into the vessel of soapy water and ultimately drown.

4. Yellow Trap

It has been found that grasshoppers tend to be attracted to the yellow color, so it is a good idea to set a yellow trap. As you might already know, insects see things in the UV gamut, and light colors tend to mirror UV light, which makes them visually appealing to insects.

For this reason, you can also set up a blanket trap using a yellow blanket to catch grasshoppers.

Final Thoughts

With that, I have come to the end of my guide; hopefully, now you know about the effective ways to trap grasshoppers.

You can also consider setting out a small container or a bucket with a 10:1 solution of molasses to water to trap grasshoppers. However, if you want to catch them alive, avoid this method, as the insects will most likely drown if not taken out of the solution quickly.

On that note, it’s a wrap. See you soon!
