Chickens have this habit of scattering their feed and may often walk all over them. They might also leave droppings in the meal, which can make the food inedible. I have lost a lot of expensive mash in this way, and that left me utterly disappointed.
That is precisely when my neighbor reached out. She had been maintaining poultry for a long time, and her husband had taught her how to make a hanging chicken feeder. The techniques prevent spillage and are very beneficial.

How To Construct A Feeder?
To help you understand it better, I have broken down the process into steps. Follow them to make your own feeder at home with recycled items.
Step 1: Getting A Plastic Bucket
The first thing that you will require is a 5-gallon plastic bucket. Now I will advise you to not buy a new one as it will only cost a lot; you will not need anything fancy. The chickens are just going to be interested in the food!
My neighbor told me about how you can actually get it for free from fast-food restaurants. They use these kinds of buckets on a daily basis for margarine and other food items, which are later thrown or given away. You might have to spend a dollar at max, if not for free.
Step 2: Finding A Suitable Pan
Next, you will require a circular pan that is shallow. Make sure that you pick one up with a lip all around the edge. This could be the lid of your old metal garbage can, or you may reuse other items which look similar.
The diameter needs to be around 1-½ to 3 inches bigger than the diameter of your hopper. But it should not be deeper than 4 inches.
In case you do not find a pan, you can make one with a sheet of metal. I took my husband’s help in doing this and I managed to make a suitable pan with a lip.
Step 3: Constructing The Feeder
Once you have both the items, take the plastic bucket and turn it upside down. You will have to snip the bottom now but remember to leave a 1-inch border on all sides. Now, take a piece of plywood that is cut according to the diameter of the inside of your bucket. It should be half an inch thick and should cover the entire length of the bucket.
The piece needs to be kept inside your bucket so that its ends rest on the rim. You can then drill holes on both ends of the wooden piece and the plastic. Use nuts and bolts to secure it.
Once this is in place, find the middle of the wooden piece and drill a hole in it. This should be able to support a ¼-inch bolt. Then you will have to insert the threaded fastener; it should lead towards the bottom. Fix it with a nut and bolt at the top, after which, another nut and washer will need to be attached halfway up.
Step 4: Creating The Feeding Pan
Take a rubber mallet or a hammer and slowly work on the middle of the bottom surface of your lid. It should then be raised as high as the outer lip to form a circular trough near the sides. Next, you will have to drill a hole near the center and slip it onto the bolt, measuring 3 inches.
Step 5: Fixing The Washer
A large amount of mash has to be kept on the feeder, and it should be able to hold it. So, I would recommend you to place a metal disk instead of using a plastic washer below the pan. Any round metal object can be used, but I decided to go for an old paint bottle lid.
Moving on, drill a hole in the middle of it and put the bolt in. This needs to be tightly fastened with a wing nut. After this is done, a rope has to be attached to the handle of the bucket, which can be used to hang it in place.
After it is made successfully, you can adjust the flow of mash by just moving the nuts on top and under your pan. Ensure that both the nuts are always tightened on either side of the pan as otherwise, the grain distribution will not be similar for all sides.
