How To Modify A Chainsaw For More Power

No one can ever have enough power on their chainsaw.

This is especially true if you have been using the chainsaw for a while and it starts to slow down. However, like any other power tool, chainsaws are an investment. So, the next best thing is modifying them for better performance.

Hence, I thought of coming up with this guide to explain how to modify a chainsaw for more power. So, let’s jump into it!

Is It Legal To Modify A Chainsaw?

One of the things to ensure before modifying a chainsaw is that your alternations don’t cause trouble — even legally. That said, the chainsaw you buy has a safe design, making it a legal power tool with the proper certifications.

But, when you tamper with the chainsaw, there’s always a chance to include an error that can cause accidents. And when it comes to adding more power to a chainsaw, the only thing you can do is modify the muffler.

How To Modify The Muffler Of A Chainsaw?

First, let’s learn about what’s a muffler in a chainsaw. The primary function of a muffler in a chainsaw is to reduce the engine noise while it’s running. Moreover, the muffler works on the exhaust to reduce the inhalation of gasses.

Now, the muffler of a chainsaw usually has two holes on top of it. But, to increase the power of your chainsaw, you’ll need to drill extra holes to open up the engine. Alternatively, you can cut slits in the front of the muffler rather than drilling holes.

So, let’s have a look at the steps.

Step 1: Find The Muffler

The position of the muffler is usually on the side of a chainsaw, positioned away from the operator.

Step 2: Remove The Muffler

The next step would be to remove the muffler from the body of the chainsaw. And, follow it up by taking out the nuts so you can make the holes in the muffler cover.

Step 3: Take Measurements

Rather than making random holes, take proper measurements of the surface area right above the exhaust port. Multiply that number with 0.8 as you want to cover less than 80% of the area while maintaining the power of your chainsaw.

Step 4: Make Preparations For Making Hole

Choose a spot on your muffler for the hole and mark it. Now, select a suitable drill bit that covers less than 80% of the exhaust port and wouldn’t cause damage to the muffler cover. Or take a smaller drill bit to make multiple holes.

Step 5: Drill The Hole

Now, it’s time to drill the hole and file down any jagged edges with a hand file.

Step 6: Reinstall The Muffler

The last step is to reset the muffler to its original position and ensure it’s facing away from you.

Final Words

That’s everything I had to tell you about modifying a chainsaw for more power. Nevertheless, you should consider contacting the company first if you feel there’s a problem with the muffler or exhaust.

Additionally, don’t forget to read the manual for more troubleshooting tips. And most importantly, stay safe. Until next time!
