Going to the theatre to watch a recent release is surely fun. But watching it in your backyard can make the experience more special.
It is true that one can go for a drive-in movie night, but if you have some space on your property, why not arrange one out there? It is cozier, more cost-effective, and frankly, saves you from the hassle of dressing up!
Unless it is raining or snowing, my children are always up for a fun outdoor movie session during the weekends. And I cannot help but oblige.
Hi! I am Stacy Smith, and today I will take you through all that you need to know about how to show a movie outside. With the right equipment, you can get it done in under 30 minutes. And I am here to help you do just that. I will also list the things that you need to keep in mind to make the experience smooth and enjoyable.
So, without any more delay, let’s dive right in!
Is Your Backyard Good For Movies?
Before you can determine whether your outdoor space is suitable for showing movies, you need to figure out the most crucial thing: a power source. Remember that you will require power outlets that are easily accessible. However, there’s nothing to worry about if you do not have a direct power source outside, as you can always get an extension cord.
Another thing to keep in mind is to check the weather forecast. After all, you would not want a sudden downpour to ruin your outdoor movie party. Besides, you’d need to keep the yard properly leveled and clean to ensure that your guests can sit comfortably and no one trips and falls.
You should also ensure that you’re protecting the setup from any bright light sources. Although you’re possibly going to hold the screening during the dark, sometimes headlights from cars or street lights can cause distractions.
What Will You Need?
1. A Good Sound System
A decent sound system is an absolute must when you consider streaming movies in an outdoor space, be it in the parking space or in your backyard. Most of the projectors come with a 10W sound system, which are not really sufficient when hosting an outdoor movie theater.
So, it is best that you keep a powered speaker system handy. But before you can decide on which kind of speaker to go for, make sure that you check the projector first. Suppose, your projector comes with a 3.5 mm output. Then, you’d have to get a speaker that comes with a 3.5 mm input.
From my experience of hosting weekend outdoor movie nights with my family, I can say with conviction that a 100W powerhouse speaker works great.
A majority of the high-power speakers are also significantly bigger in size. But if you have enough space, I would always recommend that you go for a speaker with a higher capacity, even if it occupies more space.
2. Projector

Undoubtedly, the most important thing, or perhaps, the life of an outdoor screening is the projector. There are plenty of options that you will find on the market. But when you’re considering one for this purpose, I would suggest that you focus more on the lumens and resolution.
Lumen is basically the brightness output, which naturally becomes a crucial factor when viewing movies outdoors. A model which ranges between 3000 and 4500 lumens is ideally suited for outdoor movie viewing.
And as for the resolution, I always prefer going for a 1080p projector. But then again, nothing better than a 4K resolution model!
3. Portable Screen Or Sheet
Honestly, I had to stretch my budget a bit to buy the screen that I have now. And I would do that again, as a good-quality screen has fewer wrinkles than a sheet available in the same price range. The fewer the wrinkles, the less distorted is the picture quality.
When using a sheet or screen, always ensure that you pull it well and make it taut before securing it to the stands. This will ensure that there are less wrinkles, even if it’s windy.
Creating The Setup
1. Location
When creating a setup for outdoor movie viewing, you must determine its location. I asked my husband to install a couple of DIY pole stands specifically for this purpose. You can also install hooks on your fence, garage door or between the beams of the patio to hang the screen.
2. Fixing The Sound
If you don’t already have speakers installed in the backyard and you have suddenly planned a movie night, get a portable speaker for a makeshift setup.
3. Setting Up The Projector
Not all projectors come with a stand, and in that case, you might need to make some arrangements to elevate it. For that purpose, you would need to prop the device on a stool or side table, whichever is of the right height in accordance with the screen.
4. Love Thy Neighbor
Just because you are having fun with friends and family does not mean you get to disturb the neighbors. If you stay in a populated locality and have started the screening late at night, make sure that you keep the sound low in order to let them sleep.
Final Words
With that, it’s a wrap!
Planning a movie night is no easy task, but I hope that you would be able to arrange one efficiently after reading my guide. The point is to have fun while you are at it.
More than the equipment, it is the company that always matters to me. So, I put in a reasonable effort to create a pleasing ambiance, with piles of blankets and cushions to create a high-school getaway feel. And on the best days, I get hurricane candles and wine chillers to get everyone in the right mood.
Don’t forget to write to me in the comments section below about your experience, queries or suggestions. Until next time, adios!
