How To Stop A Plastic Greenhouse Blowing Away

Plastic greenhouses offer several advantages, such as lower initial investment, easier setup and maintenance, and better functional properties.

Unfortunately, they are not the best option for windy areas as they can easily get blown away. To prevent that from happening, you will need to secure your greenhouse properly.

And today, I’m going to share with you some of the best methods of how to stop a plastic greenhouse blowing away. So, let’s get started!

Techniques To Prevent A Plastic Greenhouse Blowing Away

1. Securing The Greenhouse

In windy areas, you can use ground anchor stakes to secure large plastic greenhouses to the ground, while for low polytunnel or smaller models, pegs can be used.

2. Burying Extra Greenhouse Cover

If your greenhouse comes with extra material like PVC glazing, it can be buried in trenches to secure the greenhouse more effectively. Dig trenches 20 cm deep and then bury the greenhouse cover using sand to provide the structure with adequate wind protection.

3. Using Reinforcement Patches

Reinforcement patches work wonderfully to secure plastic greenhouses to the ground.

Use duct tape to attach reinforcement patches to the outside and inside of the greenhouse. Alternatively, you can punch a few holes in the patching and secure it to the frame joints.

4. Securing The Greenhouse To A Fence

Another excellent idea is to secure your greenhouse to a fence that will prevent it from blowing away. Either screw the greenhouse to the fence using nails or tie it using a rope, as both methods will work equally well.

5. Place Paving Slabs Near The Greenhouse Base

Paving slabs can help weigh down the greenhouse when you stack them around its base. If you do not have paving slabs at hand, use a bag of sharp sand or very heavy stones to get the job done.

6. Load Paving Slabs

Besides using paving slabs around the base of the plastic greenhouse, you can load them onto its bottom shelf. This will work in the same way by weighing down the greenhouse and preventing it from blowing away.

7. Placing The Greenhouse In A Sheltered Spot

Probably the most cost-effective and easiest way of preventing your plastic greenhouse from blowing away is by placing it in an area where it is protected from strong winds. Such spots may be found behind your garage or in the corner of the garden, but make sure that it gets enough sunlight for the plants to grow.

8. Using Tape

Yet another economical method is to tape the inside and the outside of the plastic greenhouse to block the gaps where wind can pass through and cause damage.

Final Words

These were some of the most effective methods of preventing your plastic greenhouse from blowing away. And the best part is that you can use more than one of these methods simultaneously for the best results.

With that, it’s a wrap, and see you next time!
