A tile backsplash can be a wonderful element to add to your kitchen. However, many homeowners with uneven countertops aren’t sure of the process.

I faced the same dilemma when I decided to tile a backsplash on my drab-looking kitchen. Fortunately, I found a couple of tips and tricks that helped me tile evenly with my uneven countertop.

Curious to know how? Read on to find out.

How To Tile Backsplash With Uneven Countertop

You may not even realize it, but most old homes have uneven countertops. That doesn’t mean that you cannot install a tile backsplash evenly. In fact, adding this new element can instantly brighten up the space - and it’s quite simple and convenient.

Here are the simple steps you need to follow.

Step 1

Begin by taking accurate measurements of the countertop all the way from the bottom of the cabinets to the top. Take one tile and place it against the wall, marking the point on the wall where the top of the tile ends.

Step 2

Use a laser level or any standard level to extend the point you have marked on the wall. This will be the reference for laying out the rest of the tiles. The tiles at the bottom may not need to be cut, but the ones at the top may have to be, depending on the uneven gaps.

Lay out all the tiles symmetrically and strategize how to place them correctly on the wall. You can even choose to number each tile so you know which tile goes where; thereby preventing uneven tiling.

Step 3

Using the right tool, cut the tiles so that they fit the wall properly, especially beneath and around the cabinets and uneven areas. Mix and apply the mastic in a small area, as this mixture dries pretty quickly. You will have to tile the area within 15 minutes post application for the best results.

Step 4

Work quickly but ensure that you use the numbered tiles properly so that any uneven gaps can be filled. Keep checking the tiles to see if they are setting properly and that they are even. And work from the bottom up to complete the project.

You now have a beautiful tile backsplash on your countertop!

Final Words

Trust me- as daunting as the task may look initially, tiling a backsplash on uneven countertops the DIY way is not too tough.

So, if you have been wondering, “how to tile backsplash with uneven countertop,” you now have the simple steps right here. But ensure that you use the power tools (like drills and saws) carefully and always have protective gear on.
