Plus, most shop vacs feature wheels for easy maneuverability.
A wet shop vac can remove water without any external or internal damage. Other than using it as a water pump, some creative and practical ways to use the shop vac include:
- Running wires through the pipe
- Unclogging a blocked sink
- Cleaning a BBQ pit
- Inflating pool toys and accessories
- Cleaning aquariums
- Removing snow from floors and stairs
Shop Vac vs. Household Vacuum
As mentioned before, shop vacs are suitable for more heavy-duty jobs as compared to a household vacuum. This calls for a bigger, more durable hose and a powerful motor, both of which are present in a shop vac.
Additionally, since a shop vac absorbs more dirt and bigger particles, it needs to be lifted and flipped to dispose of the waste material. Contrarily, a household vacuum only requires you to remove the filter.

There is no doubt that water spills around the house and yard can create a mess. Especially if there is a running source of water and you end up with a flooded floor that needs to be cleaned immediately. While small spills can be tackled easily with a mop, larger spills will need a water pump to remove the water from a certain point and drain it out.
However, the challenge does not end there. While using a water pump, you must ensure that the device does not get overheated. Hence, you should choose the right type of pump to effectively drain water without causing any heat and power issues.
How Does A Shop Vac Make An Efficient Water Pump?
One of the main reasons to use your shop vac as a water pump is… well, because you already own a shop vac! Since you use it more often, you might as well turn it into a water pump for a once-in-a-month deep clean of the pool or any flooded area.
Moreover, a water pump is not exactly cheap, so investing in it only to use it rarely does not sound like the most cost-efficient idea.

How To Use Shop Vac For Water Pump?
Step 1- Attach A Pump
Start with removing the lid of your shop vac. The cover will have two snaps on each side which can be removed and lifted. Attach a tube-shaped pump to it, which you can easily find in a local hardware or appliance store.
Step 2- Add A Hose
Once connected, shut the lid and remove the stopper fixed behind the vacuum. Attach a hose to the empty hole and secure it well with a thread.
Step 3- Remove The Filter
If you’re using a dry shop vac, the chances of water damage are high. Thus, remove the filter and any other parts which are not suitable for wet use.
Step 4- Time To Test It!
Now, place the vacuum so that the hose is fixed at the drainage area and the suction tube can be held to expel water. Turn the power on, and you’re good to go!
I’d advise you to use a good-quality hose to ensure proper drainage. Also, it makes sense to go through the instruction manual of the product before experimenting with it.
Cleaning And Storage
After using your shop vac as a water pump successfully, you must dispose of the wastewater carefully. To ensure this, open the canister and remove large chunks of metal or wooden waste if any. Then, you can pour the wastewater wherever suitable. Note that water containing construction waste is not ideal for plants.
Moreover, expanding the uses of your shop vac means regular care and maintenance. Fret not; this won’t take more than a few minutes. Simply rinse the canister and hose with running water. Mix 1/4 cup of bleach with a gallon of warm water and pour the mixture into the canister. This will prevent mold and mildew infestation.
Ensure that the canister and the hose are completely dry before storage. I recommend hanging the hose to dry and keeping the canister open until the last drop of water has dried up.
