When we were kids, the only kind of bike we knew was the flat pedaled one.
Yet, there are two main types of bike pedals - the flat and the clipless. I know this as I like to bike sometimes over small hills, especially whenever my son is in town.
But this time I was surprised to see him using clipless pedals. When I asked him about it, he said he had switched to the new pedal type some time back. And, now that he's made the switch, he doesn't want to go back to the flat pedals any longer.
So when he convinced me to give clipless pedals a try, I thought I'd go for it.
Hi! I'm Stacy Smith, and today I've decided to discuss mountain bike flat pedals vs. clipless pedals. This question has been a debate in the biking community for a while now. So, as someone who has tried both, I'd like to throw in my two cents on the matter.
So, without further ado, let's begin.
Flat Pedals Vs. Clipless Pedals
In order to help decide which one is better for you, I've highlighted some of the features, differences, advantages, and disadvantages of both types of pedals.
Flat Pedals
Advantages
1. Universal Pedals
Flat pedals are the default, and you can find the exact design and type no matter where you go. Every bike shop will have parts and replacement options for flat pedals. Unlike clipless ones, you do not need to find specialized cycle shops to get a quick repair done.
These are also pedals that everyone learns the first time they are riding a bike. Furthermore, they are the most straightforward option for beginners because getting on and off the bike is faster and easier.
2. Wear Any Shoes
The convenient thing about using flat pedals is that you don't need special shoes to use them. You can wear regular attire and shoes and hop on the bike whenever you feel like it. But with clipless ones, you don't have this freedom.
Also, you do not need to place the foot in a specific location with these pedals. You can ride the bike naturally as your feet assume the most comfortable position.
3. Flat Pedals Are Cheaper
With clipless pedals, you need to buy specialized equipment like shoes, without which your pedals are useless. Since you do not need to buy special shoes, pedals, and cleats, flat pedals are a cost-saving option.

Disadvantage
1. Less Control And Power
One thing is for sure, riding a bike faster is difficult with flat pedals. You can only apply power on the downstroke but never while pulling your feet up. This also contributes to exhaustion sooner. Navigating through roads or hills is challenging with this option, especially when you don't have enough control over the bike.
Clipless Pedals
Clipless pedals are essentially those which allow you to attach the soles of your shoes to the pedals. The primary purpose of this design is to always keep your foot in the best position for cycling. Mountain bikers, road cyclists, and bicycle tourists often find these to be the most convenient option for long-distance biking.
Using them isn't complicated either. All you have to do is step on the pedal to attach it and hear the clicking sound. If it clicks, that means it's perfectly attached. When you need to remove the foot, take your heel out first, and the shoe detaches from the pedal.
Advantages
1. Improved Pedalling Efficiency
It is true that with the correct technique, you can ride any kind of bike efficiently. Yet, some cyclists find that clipless pedals are more efficient than flat pedals. This is primarily due to the fact that clipless pedals allow you to keep your feet in the correct position and form for cycling easily.
This ensures smooth and powerful pedal strokes, which may help if you have an uneven pedaling pattern. Also, with clipless pedals, you need to wear the proper footwear, which will automatically improve pedaling.
2. Less Stress On Knees And Anti-Slip
Studies on competitive cyclists show that clipless pedals exert less pressure on the knees and prevent unhealthy knee movement. Lower pressure and the ability to move the knees in the best positions possible make it less stressful to the joints.
Also, clipless pedals prevent slipping because the cleats keep the foot attached to the pedal at all times. This is especially useful when cycling on uneven or wet terrain.
3. Better Power And Control
Attaching the foot to the bike helps maneuver your legs and bike better, giving you more control. With this support and control, you can navigate through trails more easily. Moreover, you can adjust your weight as the trail progresses without slipping off the bike.
Not only is the control better, but you can also apply more power to the pedal. Since the foot isn't going to move in the wrong direction, it becomes convenient for cyclists to accelerate and climb terrains.
- DUAL FUNCTION: These bike pedals not only can ride with clipless shoes(come with gasket*2 ), compatible with all MTB bike pedals system; The other side, as normal pedals with cleats, perfect for road, mountain, MTB, Bikes.
- WIDE PLATFORM: The pedals are enlarged and widened to increase the contact area between the soles of the feet and the pedals, which allows for better power when riding and improves stability and comfort.
- SAFETY: There are 8 non-slip screws on the flat side of the pedals, which can make better power without slipping when riding and ensure riding safety.
Disadvantage
1. Takes Time To Learn
The first time I tried clipless pedals, I nearly crashed even though I wasn't moving fast. If you are planning to make the switch, know that it feels uncomfortable and strange at first. You'll need to allow frequent use to get the hang of it and develop muscle memory.
Don't be embarrassed if you forget the pedals are clipless and crash. Everyone who starts goes through this, so practice a few times in the safety of your neighborhood to get accustomed to them.
Final Words - Which One Is Better For Mountain Biking?
If you ask me, I haven’t gotten used to clipless pedals so far. Even though I have attempted to try them a few times now, I’ll stick to my old-fashioned flat pedals for now. However, if you are an experienced biker looking to upgrade to something smoother and faster, clipless pedals are the way to go.
Cycling on mountain and hilly terrains requires a high level of control and power, both of which you’ll find in clipless pedals. I hope you found this short article about flat and clipless pedals useful and now have a better idea about which one to select for yourself.
I’ll see you in the next one, bye!
