Are you curious about the origin story of talk radio?
This brilliant innovation has been around for decades and was one of the first media of entertainment for the general public. I still remember it vividly, when I was little, my family used to gather around the radio every week to listen to the then famous talk show Geraldo.
It used to be the highlight of my week, and I listened with utmost concentration, making the best out of each and every second of the show. Reflecting back on those little moments always fills me up with joy.
But when I was thinking about the present-day scenario of entertainment, it hit me - the way people are all bombarded with content everywhere. Back in the days, the options were so limited, and therefore radio shows, especially talk radio, played a crucial part in infotainment.
Hey guys, I am Stacy Smith and being struck by nostalgia today, I will talk about the history of talk radio. Are you ready?
Let’s get started!
What Is Talk Radio?
Nearly eighty percent of radio and broadcast stations across the United States include some attributes of talk radio in their functioning. In fact, certain stations like Talkradio Network (by ABC), Talknet (by NBC) are devout to live talks all around the clock.
Radio talk shows are broadcasts that are centered around speeches and conversations among hosts and guests. They include multiple formats and genres like politics, sports, entertainment, and music.
Not to mention, they involve various aspects like featured music, integrated news, interviews, sound effects, debates, political and social commentary.
Origin Story
Talk radio emerged for the first time in western nations in the 1920s and has been a prominent feature of the broadcast world ever since. The earliest examples include Alexander Woolcott’s show on New York’s WOR and a political program hosted by Walter Winchell on NBC.
Once again, the west beat the other parts of the world since the concept of talk radio came here well over two decades ahead of them. It had far-reaching and impactful connotations for the communities in modern societies because it gave them a platform to participate and develop opinions.
Talk radio also influenced both everyday and political conversations by forming agendas and presenting models of talks. It is fascinating to note that as people developed affection towards radio hosts and personalities, they made space for them in their daily conversations and weekly schedules.

A Brief Overview Of The Journey
Let’s look at the changing and ever-evolving trends in the history of talk radio over the century.
Beginning
When it first began, the main aim of the talk radio was to keep everyone informed about the happenings of the war and entertain people of all ages. It was a source of recreation before the emergence of any other technology like television or the internet.
Much before people learned broadcasting music on the radio, it was used for circulating news and trending discussions. Once the talk show genre was firmly established, the focus of the shows shifted to complicated and hefty discussions like cultural practices, politics, and talks about society.
These shows were a hit amongst the general public because they addressed important issues and brought forward fresh opinions and perspectives from different speakers. The listeners remained hooked to this first-ever source of infotainment.
In addition to that, the listeners could participate in talk radio through different means. The stations used to conduct competitions, call-in polls, and small conversations with guests. This was a novel strategy and something that was never experienced before.
The 1930s To 1940s
By the 1930s, more interactive and conversational formats came into play with the “man on the street” interviews. These were taped interviews that were put on air after being recorded.
What’s more, the “town hall meetings” featured live discussions of trending events among the studio audiences.
Talk radio saw further advancements with time when call-in programs started in the 1940s. Up until then the shows were centered around public discussions that were conducted in hall gatherings, but with call-in programs, anyone who was remotely situated could participate.
The 1960s To 2000s
These shows became so popular that the total number in the US quadrupled between the period of early 1980 to mid-1990. During that time, talk radio was the second most popular format on the radio, closely following country music which was at first rank.
A sharp increase in predictability, a lack of FM radio personality, and a debacle of general public life were a few factors that significantly contributed to this sudden popularity.
It was in the 1980s that AM stations decided to tone down the predictability and monotony of the shows to reinstate active listening in public. They strategized to bring in more sound effects and emphasized better sound quality.
Plus, towards the end of the twentieth century, satellite technology came into the picture. And, thanks to cell phone connectivity, talk radio became even more interactive with the audience now joining in.
Final Words
I have reached the end of today’s guide. Did you get to know new things about AM and talk radio?
Hopefully, you enjoyed today’s article because it is evident from the above-mentioned discussion that the trends in talk radio have been evolving ever since it was introduced. Reflecting back on all that is surreal because you can see the crucial role played by communities, society, and the general public in shaping the format.
It is also argued by the scholars that people grew lonely and turned towards talk shows as a coping mechanism and to feel closer to their communities. What do you think about that? Let me know in the comments.
That’s it for me, and I’ll see you next time with another handy guide on more interesting topics. Till then, take care, stay safe, and keep listening to the talk radio!
