Ever faced a situation where you had no sharp object to open a package?

I recently had such an encounter when a parcel arrived at my door, and I was pretty frustrated over not finding a knife. I had to rummage through my workbench to discover my handy-dandy pocket knife, finally.

After this incident, I have vouched to myself that I will always keep a pocket knife nearby. It's quite weird to have forgotten its usefulness in the first place, as I thought that my father had successfully made me learn the lesson.

However, this incident did make me revisit my love for pocket knives, and let me tell you that I have owned multiple types in the past. My family and friends can also testify how my beloved styles of pocket knives have made it to them as gifts.

While thinking about my incident with the package, I decided that I surely mustn't be alone with this realization! So, I thought of taking up this opportunity to let you guys know about what are the different pocket knife usecases. I can vouch that having a pocket knife will undoubtedly make your life easier.

What Are The Different Pocket Knife Usecases?

What Is A Pocket Knife?

Even though it might seem self-explanatory, pocket knives can often be complicated objects. It can be as simple as a foldable knife that fits in your pocket, or it can be as elaborate as a Swiss army knife.

To put it in the simplest of terms, a pocket knife is just a knife that you can carry around in your pocket. However, a quick search on the internet made me realize that today, pocket knives have become sleeker and more versatile than earlier models.

Since there are many pocket knife options on the market, you can start by buying a foldable knife that is sharp and easy to open. And even though I know that you are already thinking about doing some knife-opening tricks, I recommend you be very careful while handling it.

As utility matters to me the most, I recommend my fellow camping lovers to either invest in a knife with multiple blades or get one that can cut through various materials.

Ways To Use The Pocket Knife

1. Open Packages

I started this guide by telling you about my trouble opening a package. So, you must have understood that one of the ways to use a pocket knife is to cut open packages.

The good thing about a sharp pocket knife blade is its ability to cut through the thickest of cardboard boxes. Also, if you have a tough time cutting through bubble wraps, then it will get much easier with a knife.

2. Cut Produce

Do you like growing your own fruits and veggies like me? If yes, then a pocket knife will let you peek inside the things you have grown. There have been numerous times when I have cut open a turnip soon after picking it up from the raised beds.

Moreover, I do like to carry my knife to the farmer's market to quickly take a taste of the varied available items.

3. Start A Kindling

This came to me as a surprise, but a pocket knife can also help you to light a simple fire. You will just need to gather some dry sticks, make some precise cuts on those sticks, and light the fire. It works as an excellent party trick to impress your friends during a camping trip.

4. Multipurpose Tool For Trips

There have been multiple times when I have forgotten to carry a can opener with me while on a trip, but a pocket knife has emerged as the savior. Moreover, it can help you cut ropes or prepare bandages in case of an emergency. I have even had friends tell me that it can help to remove splinters or hangnails.

5. Cutting Zip Ties

I didn't realize this before, but apparently, everything comes bound with zip ties these days. I agree that it helps to secure things in place, but it's hard to get rid of the ties without a sharp object.

Hence, having a pocket knife will allow you to quickly cut open a zip tie, even if you have accidentally pulled it close. Rather than going to and from, do try to cut it in one slash to maintain the sharpness of the blade.

6. Open A Bottle

Like everyone else, even I have misplaced several bottle openers. However, I have learned the trick of placing the bottle on flat ground and then using my dominant hand to pry open the cap or cork with a pocket knife. Remember to be extra careful if it's a glass bottle, and use your non-dominant hand to hold the bottle to maintain balance.

7. Pruning Plants

Let me tell you a secret: I don't like to carry those heavy-duty shears around the garden. Instead, I like to use my sharp pocket knife to prune the trees. I find it easier, lighter and more precise than large clunky garden shears.

I have been able to cut both hard and soft stems with my pocket knife. However, the one aspect to take care of is to achieve a clean cut; this way, you can ensure minimal damage to the plant tissues.

Final Words

I hope that this guide about use cases of pocket knives will help you make more versatile use of this convenient tool. Just be a bit careful while using it to avoid any accidental cuts.

And don’t worry about getting the wrong pocket knife, as there’s nothing like that. According to my experience, a bit of practice can let you master every tool, and it’s the same with a pocket knife.

Do share this guide with those who might find it helpful. Also, you can always let me know if there are any further questions related to pocket knives.

Till then, take care!
