When it comes to selecting the ideal place, you should always pick a place that receives adequate sunlight throughout the year. Ideally, herbs prefer at least six to eight hours of sunlight per day.
Whenever a herb doesn’t receive adequate sunlight, they end up looking dull, leggy, and unproductive, which you should avoid at all times. Besides this, you should always check the different areas of your lawn and see which area receives the most sunlight.
Based on the experience, I would suggest noting down all the different intervals of sunlight at the various spots and comparing them before choosing the right place. However, this might not be the case for all the herbs.
Some herbs flourish in shady areas. If you plan to grow these types of herbs, I recommend choosing a place with less sunlight.
Another important factor to consider while picking the ideal place is the type of soil it contains. Generally, herbs require a well-drained soil that is easy to till and light in weight. Moreover, you should also check the quality of soil by running water at the selected location.
If you notice that the soil is not absorbing the water evenly, you may have to add some compost, sand, or peat to help the soil absorb more water.
In contrast to this, the soil shouldn’t be rich in nutrients as it would leave the herbs prone to infections from various diseases. Most herbs prefer a pH level of 6.5, but they can still tolerate alkaline and acidic soil.
Herbs are meant to be admired and used; therefore, you should be practical in choosing the correct location to suit all your needs. Selecting an open area would be ideal for enjoying the aesthetic view of your herbs.
Never pick a dark yard that receives less sunlight since the herbs would look dull and less vibrant. In general, one of the best places to grow your herbs is at the back of the lawn, as you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and savory scent.
On the other hand, you can also grow your herbs with other plants and flowers as it can give a somewhat unique and attractive display. Herbs can easily blend with any flowers or shrubs, so you wouldn’t need to worry about cross-pollination.
Also, you should make sure that the location has a proper irrigation facility and adequate water reserve under the soil. In most cases, herbs will require a good amount of hydration and moisture. If the place doesn’t have a natural water reservoir, then you should build an artificial tank to provide water regularly to your herbs.
Lastly, the location should be thoroughly checked for pests like worms, incest, and rodents that could possibly harm your plants. Some pests can be naked to the eyes as they hide in the soil; hence you should get the soil tested at least once. After clearing all these factors, you can safely grow your herbs in the garden.
