Best Indoor Rabbit Cage To Raise Happy Fluffballs

I have grown up watching Bugs Bunny, and as a kid, I always wanted a pet rabbit.

But thanks to the misleading animation, I believed that carrots are a rabbit’s favorite food. Only after several weeks of research was I able to identify what’s best, what’s not, and everything in between.

Now, I hadn’t spilled a word to my husband. But, seeing me so absorbed into learning about these adorable mammals, he picked one up from the nearby adoption center. It’s a white mini rex, and I named him Tofu!

Although I was elated when I held the fluffy bunny, I was nervous due to my lack of knowledge of its species. Plus, I was raising two dogs, who were way too friendly for Tofu’s liking. So, finding the best indoor rabbit cage was the first thing I did, and thankfully, I found multiple options that I would like to share with you.

Without further ado, let’s jump right in...

Top 5 Indoor Rabbit Cage

1. Living World 61859A1

Living World 61859A1

This extra-large rabbit cage earns brownie points for its easy assembly and inclusion of essential items in the package. Thanks to the latter, this cage is an all-in-one safe space for pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas who will enjoy a spacious shelter.

Product Highlights

When it comes to design, I appreciate the dual material used for enhanced ventilation without compromising stability. The top half is a wired frame that allows air circulation, while the base is made of high-quality plastic. So, even if your energetic rabbits keep jumping around, rest assured that the cage will never lose its balance.

Additionally, the cage sports a balcony with a hideout below. The ramp at the edge is included for small animals to get onto the balcony. Not only does this add a fun element for the pet, but it looks adorable, too!

Lastly, the inclusion of a food bowl, a water bottle, and a hay feeder make pet care a convenient experience. Everything your furry friend needs will be within reach.

What’s There To Like About It?

Right off the bat, the spacious design is what convinced me to get this rabbit cage by Living World. Just like my dogs, Tofu is an agile guy, even inside the cage! So, I wanted something that had enough room to move around, and this product was the solution.

Moreover, during my search for a rabbit cage, I came across a few comments complaining about the inadequate instruction manual. But, to my surprise, the instructions were easy to figure out.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

I’ve got no complaints about the quality and features of this cage. However, since there are many parts included, beginners may find it difficult to assemble. This also makes cleaning and maintenance a tedious task.

Moving on, the price of this product is a bit on the steeper side. So, if you’re on a tight budget, you may want to look at other options.

Pros and Cons of Living World 61859A1

  • Hybrid Design: The hybrid cage consists of an upper wire frame and plastic bottom base. Wire frame is elegantly styled, with an arcing red wire top and white wire sides. Top opens easily in 2 separate parts with a wire door at the front.
  • Safe Environment: Living World Deluxe Habitat includes a balcony with an access ramp, a tip-proof food dish that secures to the balcony floor, and a hideaway space under the balcony to provide your small pet with a quiet and secure hiding place.

2. Midwest 157

Midwest 157

If you’re looking for a simple and sturdy design, this mesh grid rabbit cage is your best bet. Its no-nonsense design allows easy access and portable storage, making this product perfect for pet owners who are always on the go.

Product Highlights

Measuring 25 x 19 x 20 inches, this cage is a well-ventilated shelter for small pets. While it does not include any accessories like the previous product, its minimalism works for owners who keep their pets in for shorter periods.

Its simple and practical design allows ease of use and maintenance. First is the double door feature that lets you reach your pets from the top and the front. Secondly, the slide-out plastic pan equipped with a urine splash guard allows convenient cleaning.

Moreover, this foldable cage is perfect for traveling or storing in small spaces. You do not need to assemble or disassemble it time and again. This factor also makes it a popular choice among beginners.

Lastly, the wire mesh floor grid is a useful addition as it keeps the rabbit’s hocks clean, away from its own waste.

What’s There To Like About It?

Albeit starkly different from my first choice, this rabbit cage by Midwest is my go-to choice while traveling. Thanks to its lightweight structure and foldable design, I can easily toss it in any nook or corner of my car and assemble it whenever needed.

Taking care of pets is no joke, especially if they are binge snackers! Because more snacks produce more droppings. But, with the mesh floor and slide-out pan below it, maintaining hygiene is no big deal.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

Speaking of the wire mesh, some rabbits may take some time to get used to the texture or may end up hating it! Thankfully, I did not face any such issues with Tofu.

However, I’d like to mention that using cloth and any type of bedding can get tricky. This is because it tends to get caught in the mesh and thus, damages the material.

Pros and Cons of Midwest 157

Pros

  • Foldable design allows easy assembly
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Equipped with a splash guard
  • Sturdy and airy wire mesh construction

Cons

  • Mesh floor may damage soft bedding
MidWest Homes for Pets Wabbitat Folding Rabbit Cage

3. Ware Manufacturing 01991

Ware Manufacturing 01991

If you want something colorful to match with your bunny’s cuteness, this cage by Ware Manufacturing is the perfect pick. Its durable plastic and wire construction allows your pet to stay protected and well-ventilated at all times.

Product Highlights

This one is another travel-friendly product with a simple design. Besides rabbits, most rodents enjoy a little swing on hammocks, and the bars on this cage are ideal for that purpose. Plus, the high-quality plastic and metal wire are chew-proof and resistant to scratches, making the cage last considerably longer.

Measuring 28 x 17 x 15.5 inches, this cage is perfect for rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, and more. It is also compact for traveling yet spacious enough for your little companion to move around.

Moving on, the deep plastic base can be a plus for small rodent-owners as they will not be able to escape, even if the cage is unlocked. This design is convenient for cleanup, too. I recommend adding wood and paper shavings to prevent odor.

What’s There To Like About It?

While this may not be suitable for those with set favorites, I love the fact that we cannot choose the color of the product. It’s always a surprise!

Another point to note is the powder-coated wire mesh that does not budge even if your pets scratch or nibble on it. The rest of the materials are resistant to stain and odor, so cleaning is never a hassle.

Although this cage does not leave much room for an adult rabbit to hop around, I find it convenient during short road trips.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

One major flaw is the gap between the bars, making it easy for small rodents to escape. This wouldn’t have been a problem if the product wasn’t advertised as a suitable cage for hamsters.

Moreover, as I had mentioned before, I use this cage for traveling only. It’s not big enough for daily use, especially for rabbits and guinea pigs.

Pros and Cons of Ware Manufacturing 01991

Pros

  • Multiple colorful variants
  • Stain-resistant and odor-resistant
  • Does not scratch easily
  • Compact yet spacious

Cons

  • Not suitable for small rodents

4. Little Friends TK51053

Little Friends TK51053

Two is better than one, and your little ones are going to love this two-storeyed cage. It has ample space to run around and a ramp for accessing the upper floor. Since rabbits need at least four hours of physical activity, this cage is perfect for them.

Product Highlights

Measuring 32.28 x 17.72 x 9.45 inches, this X-large cage by Little Friends is available in three colors. The plastic hay racks are sturdy and durable, while the secure wooden ramp sports enough friction for your pet to walk over it with ease.

There are two doors- one at the top and one drop-down opening at the front. So, no matter where your pet is resting, you can share some treats from any of the doors.

Despite being easy to assemble and pull apart, the materials of the cage are anything but flimsy. This makes it a solid choice for restless rabbits and rodents alike.

Unlike some of the previous products, this cage is generously spaced, making it suitable for longer use. Overall, this product is a valuable investment for happy and healthy pets!

What’s There To Like About It?

Undoubtedly, the two-storeyed design is what caught my eye. I never realized how much rabbits would enjoy shifting their resting place until I got this product. Also, Tofu loves running up and down the wooden ramp, and it makes for an amusing sight!

Another impressive feature would be the easy assembling process of this cage. Beginners will appreciate the detailed instruction manual included in the package. Consequently, this unit allows effortless cleaning as well.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

While I have no complaints about the quality and performance of this product, I think the ramp could have been placed and aligned better. This is because it is too steep and squishes to the edge of the cage, making it rather uncomfortable.

Thus, if your pets tend to get nervous, the design of this cage may not be suitable.

Pros and Cons of Little Friends TK51053

Pros

  • Roomy two-tier structure
  • Instruction manual included
  • Easy assembly and maintenance
  • High-quality construction

Cons

  • Inadequate ramp placement

5. Precision Pet 1910-3LARGE

Precision Pet 1910-3LARGE

Closing the list is another minimal design cage by Precision Pet. Available in two sizes, this black wired cage provides optimum security and ventilation. Assembling it is a no-brainer, so if you’re looking for your first cage, get this one without a second thought.

Product Highlights

Simple and durable, this rabbit cage is convenient enough for traveling and spacious enough for daily use. Its wired cage build is perfect for allowing maximum airflow, so your pets feel comfortably breezy throughout.

Reaching your pet or offering food and water is as easy as A-B-C with the two doors on different sides of the cage. Plus, the doors are securely latched, ruling out the possibility of any escape.

Moving on, the metal construction boasts a rustproof Epoxy coating. So, it is not only strong but also safe for your pets. Consequently, the entire cage is built to last.

Lastly, assembly and maintenance is an effortless process, making the cage perfect for busy pet owners.

What’s There To Like About It?

The best part about this cage is its heavy-duty construction which makes it durable and long-lasting. I even recommended it to my friends who own rodents, and none of them have complained about the build quality.

Moreover, the assembly is not only easy but also super quick. You just have to pop it up, and it will be ready to use within a minute.

Lastly, the removable tray makes cleaning a convenient task.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

Although this cage is efficient in many aspects, a urine guard or a litter box would have been a useful addition. Despite easy cleaning, there’s a high chance of spillage, making the surrounding area a mess.

Additionally, I came across some customer reviews complaining about damage during transit. While this wasn’t the case with me, it is something you must watch out for.

Pros and Cons of Precision Pet 1910-3LARGE

Pros

  • Convenient cleaning
  • Two doors for easy access
  • Quick and easy assembly
  • Rustproof material

Buyers Guide

Now that you know the popular options on the market, it is time to look at some factors that will help you choose the best indoor rabbit cage. Further, I urge you to understand your rabbit’s behavior and preferences to make a wise choice.

Let’s take a look at some characteristics of an efficient indoor rabbit cage…

1. Material

The most important point to consider is the material of the product. The material determines the comfort level and quality of the cage. You might have to experiment a bit to identify what suits your rabbit’s preference.

According to my experience, correx plastics are sturdy and last long. Due to the high quality of this type of plastic, it will never cause any irritation or discomfort to most animals.

Additionally, weldmesh is the most-sought after material for the wired upper half of a cage. A rustproof powder coating will further enhance its durability.

Lastly, if you are looking for colored variants, ensure that the cage has only been painted with water-based solutions. Any other type of paint can be hazardous to your rabbit’s health.

2. Durability

In continuation to the previous point, durability is another factor defined by the material of the cage. And when it comes to shelters for rabbits, you cannot compromise durability at all. This is because these little guys love chewing anything under the sun.

Thanks to their ever-growing teeth, rabbits can get pretty destructive, so don’t get fooled by their cute looks!

Thus, I highly recommend looking for products with chew-proof and stain-resistant material. The life expectancy of rabbits ranges from 10-12 years, so getting them a sturdy shelter that will last long enough is a wise choice.

3. Space And Ventilation

Despite being small, a rabbit is an active animal that requires at least four hours of physical activity daily. Thus, getting a spacious cage will help in the overall development of your pet. Plus, adding toys, food bowls, bedding, and so on will be more convenient in a large cage.

Other than that, you must ensure that the cage is well-ventilated. For this, a wire mesh cage is your best bet. Since rabbits are social and playful animals, they will appreciate the free flow of air and unobstructed view. Not to mention that you can always keep an eye on them to make sure they are not uncomfortable or unhealthy.

4. Budget

Since rabbits are high-maintenance pets, regular checkups and care can get pretty expensive. Add to that a costly cage, and you will be broke for the next decade!

However, not all good-quality cages come with a hefty price. With proper research, you can easily land upon a cost-efficient product. But, you must be clear of all the characteristics you desire in a cage.

For instance, if you require a cage for the sole purpose of traveling, there’s no point in spending extra bucks on a product that includes accessories that are otherwise useful. This is where you can save up by looking for a simple, compact, and budget-friendly cage.

5. Solid Floor vs. Wired Floor

A cage with a solid floor ensures optimum comfort for rabbits but requires more effort while cleaning. This is because you need to scoop it out, wipe the floor, and then place the bedding. One way out of this hassle is to litter-train your rabbit and use a litter tray inside the cage.

On the other hand, wire floors are usually combined with a slide-out litter tray that can be cleaned conveniently whenever required. However, the downside of such flooring is that some rabbits take a long time to get used to the mesh texture. Or, in the worst-case scenario, they may even end up hating it!

6. Size

Always decide where you want to keep the cage before looking for potential options. Measure the space you can spare, and then check out rabbit cages that adhere to the dimensions. After all, nobody wants to end up with a product of the wrong size. While some brands may accept returns, the tedious process is too much of a task after waiting eagerly for the product.

7. Style

Although not a crucial factor, an indoor cage should boast a stylish design that matches the rest of your room. Or, you can opt for a minimal neutral-colored design that won’t clash with your furniture. Either way, since you will keep it indoors, you must pay some attention to its look and design, too.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does A Rabbit Cage Need To Be Covered?

Covering the cage is not a compulsion, but I prefer doing it. Since rabbits are burrowing animals, they will feel more comfortable dozing off in an enclosed area.

2. How Long Should You Cage The Rabbit?

This depends on your rabbit’s preference, so I suggest you spend enough time together to understand its behavior. I let Tofu out for most of the day, and he hops in whenever he needs some rest. Overall, I recommend keeping your rabbit active, even when it is inside the cage.

3. What Is The Best Type Of Bedding For An Indoor Rabbit Cage?

Hay, sawdust, and shredded cardboard make excellent bedding for these furry bunnies. These materials provide comfort and warmth, both of which are essential for a sound slumber.

Many people use newspapers, too, since it is a cheaper and more accessible alternative. However, I do not recommend it as the rabbit may nibble on it and ingest the harmful newspaper ink.

My Final Recommendation

Rabbits make great pets but need utmost care and commitment. And getting a safe and secure cage for them is the first step towards proper rabbit care.

I hope my review-based guide will help you choose the perfect indoor cage for your hare-y friend. But, before I sign off, I’d like to reiterate some of my favorites. The Living World 61859A1 takes the crown for being an all-in-one cage for a busy mother like me. Additionally, the Midwest 157 allows me to travel with Tofu without compromising on his security and comfort.

Let me know your favorites in the comment section below. Stay tuned for more interesting guides, and I’ll be back soon.

Until then, take care!
