How To Grow String Of Hearts From Seed

If you want a beautiful, not fussy, and unique plant, then the String of Hearts is the plant for you!

Scientifically called the Ceropegia woodii, this plant is a succulent with a long, trailing vine. It has a long life and is also really easy to grow. So now, if you’re wondering how to grow String of Hearts from seed, then read on, for this guide will tell you just that!

How To Grow String Of Hearts From Seed?

There are three broad ways to grow this plant. You can either grow it using its leaf, its cuttings, or via seeds. Though using cuttings to grow the plant is the easiest, that method isn’t possible if you don’t have a plant to take the cuttings from.

So, with this in mind, let’s take a look at how the String of Hearts can be grown from seeds.

Step 1

For starters, you must take the seeds and plant them in a seedling potting mix. Make sure that you refrain from using ordinary garden soil.

Step 2

Keep the seeds and the container somewhere warm. However, it shouldn’t be too hot, and some shade is recommended.

Step 3

After they’re planted, it takes them a month to sprout, provided it’s warm.

Once you have a flourishing String of Hearts, you can collect the seeds that are ejected from the seedpods and use them to plant another. However, seeds usually have some fluff, so they tend to drift away, so to prevent that, I recommend surrounding the seed pods with a small, breathable bag.

What Does String Of Hearts Need To Flourish?

You’ve planted the seeds, but now you also need to ensure that the plant is getting the nutrients it needs to grow. Even if you don’t have much experience growing plants, it shouldn't be too tough to look after the String of Hearts. So, let’s see what all you need to do!

1. Soil

Like I mentioned earlier, don’t use ordinary gardening soil for them. However, if you don’t have a choice, add a lot of pumice and perlite to the soil. This will make it suitable for growing succulents.

2. Light

Keep your plant somewhere it can get bright yet filtered sunlight. Harsh, direct sunlight scorches the leaves, turning them yellow.

3. Water

Though the String of Hearts is a succulent, it still needs water. Ensure that the soil remains just the right amount of damp and that it isn’t underwatered or waterlogged.

4. Temperature

This plant can withstand low temperatures only for a while. Once it dips below 20°F, the plant begins to wither soon. In addition to this, the plant can’t stand extreme heat either.

5. Fertilizer

I recommend using a low-nitrogen fertilizer that’s specially designed for succulents.

Final Thoughts

Before I conclude, I must mention that late spring/summer is the best time to grow these plants using seeds. They are dormant in winter, and if you grow them in the colder months of the year, they won’t germinate.

Growing the plant using seeds is one of the tougher methods to grow it, so I wish you success and a happy, healthy, thriving plant!
