What Kind Of A Plant Is The Variegated String Of Hearts?
This plant is also known as the collar of hearts, sweetheart vine, and rosary vine, among others. When in the wild, they usually tend to grow in inclines and rock crevices in southern Africa.
Interestingly, these plants can grow upto 13 feet if they get the right kind of environment to thrive!
When it comes to keeping it as a houseplant, you can put it in a hanging basket or attach it to a trellis. It is a semi-succulent plant which means that it can store water for future use.
The variegated string of hearts stores water in its roots or underground rhizomes that are small root-like growths. This lets the plant survive on less water and makes it low-maintenance.
How To Enhance The Pink Color Of The Variegated String Of Hearts?
The pink color of the leaves is usually what attracts most people to this plant, but sometimes the leaf loses this color. Inadequate sunlight is a common reason for the same.
All plants need sunlight to make energy, using the green pigment, i.e., chlorophyll in the leaves. The pink parts of the leaf don’t have chlorophyll, from which we can infer that these sections aren’t helpful in photosynthesis.
Now, if your plant isn’t getting enough sunlight, it’ll begin making chlorophyll in the pink parts of the leaf in a bid to produce more energy. So, this is why the pink color of the leaves begins to dissipate and become green.
Thus, you can prevent this by moving the plant nearer to a window with more sunlight. However, do keep in mind that harsh, strong sunlight can burn the leaves and ruin the plant.
