How To Hang A Picture On A Concrete Wall

I’ve always enjoyed exploring different ways of designing my home interiors. 

But when it came to concrete walls, I was just as skeptical as other homeowners in the belief that the wall might be ruined in the process. And this worried me the most when I added a second story to my home a few years ago since I had to think of ways to design the walls from scratch. 

My husband had shopped some incredible pictures for the rooms to help me out, so I was, of course, excited to put them up! But the same question lingered in my mind: won’t that damage the concrete in any way?

I decided not to tax my brain further and delve into some ‘concrete’ research on the topic. And I was delighted to find that there were quite a few ways to hang pictures on concrete walls without affecting them too much. The rest was a smooth-sailing affair, and I had the walls designed within a month!

How To Hang A Picture On A Concrete Wall

You’ll be glad to know that there are not one but three ways to hang pictures on concrete walls. Feel free to try any of these based on your comfort level with regard to the steps involved.

1. Using Hardwall Hangers

At the start, you must keep in mind that the hardwall hangers needed for the purpose should be able to hold a weight of up to 25 lbs. So, make sure the hangers you’re getting are efficient enough to work with walls of concrete. Also, the hangers should allow you to hang pictures on them. 

I found this procedure quite fast, as the hangers were ready to hold the frames in nearly no time. Note here that you’ll need two hangers to ensure the picture gets enough support. Plus, these should come with sturdy pins to anchor their base firmly on the wall. 

Step 1: Mark The Spot

You’ll need to mark the exact spots on the concrete wall where you want to install the hangers. Also, make sure that the distance between the two spots matches the width of the picture. 

Step 2: Install The Hangers

Now, position the hanger on one of the spots and hold it with one hand while you nail its four pins halfway into the wall with the other hand. 

Follow this by releasing your hand to check whether the hanger is in place and is at the right spot. After you’ve verified that the hanger is placed just where you want it to be, keep on nailing the pins. 

At this point, here’s a side note; I hammered the pins gently during the initial phase so that I could remove them in case the placement seemed improper. But for those who are not used to working with hammers and pins, I’d suggest keeping it gentle throughout so that you don’t hurt yourself accidentally. 

Step 3: Test The Arrangement

Finally, you’ll have to hang the desired picture to make sure its position is straight and accordingly make any adjustment you feel is necessary.

The best part about using adhesive hooks is that they don’t require drilling holes and instead come with adhesive backings which stick to the wall firmly. I personally find drilling holes to be tiring as well as time-consuming. So, I used this method for most of the rooms in the second story. 

Ensure that the adhesive hooks you choose must have a weight capacity of about 8 lbs. Also, remember to weigh the picture you wish to hang on the wall, as that will help you choose the right hook. 

Step 1: Prepare The Wall

First of all, you’ll have to clean the wall to ensure that the hook gets a firm hold. I recommend using alcohol for the cleanup to remove debris and other undesirable elements thoroughly. Alternatively, you may use soapy water for the purpose.

After you’ve cleaned the wall, precisely mark the places where you want to install the hook. I once did it hurriedly, which resulted in improper positioning of one of the pictures. So, be careful not to rush during this step and take the measurements accurately. 

Step 2: Stick The Hook

Now, take the hook and gently remove the film of plastic over the adhesive part. Then press the hook against the wall and hold for about 30 seconds. Ensure that the hook is lined parallel to the lower edge of the wall. 

Step 3: Wait For The Adhesive To Dry

You must let the adhesive dry for 30-60 minutes so that it gets a strong grip on the wall. When you’re sure that the hook is ready for use, test it for a while by hanging an item that weighs nearly the same as the picture. That way, you can ascertain whether the hook can hold the picture comfortably. 

3. Install Masonry Anchors

Masonry anchors are relatively more long-lasting than adhesive hooks. However, the installation process is lengthier and more complicated than the other two methods I’ve dealt with. 

It would also require you to meddle with the wall a bit as you will have to drill a pilot hole. I’ve used this method only once when I bought a larger picture for the living room. That’s because the anchor could hold the picture better than adhesive hooks or hangers. 

For this method, you’ll have to use a masonry drill and drill bits as per the ideal size of the hole. After the drilling is complete, tap the anchor and secure the screw with a screwdriver so that a part of it sticks out of the wall to hold the picture.
