The high-performing and lightweight weed trimmers from Stihl offer value for money.
But like most gardening tools, they’ll require replacement parts from time to time. For instance, their PolyCut blades might wear out after a few months of use.
In such cases, you’ll have to remove the PolyCut trimmer head to install the replacement blades. So, based on my experience with a couple of Stihl trimmers, I’ll be teaching you “how to remove Stihl polycut head.”
How To Remove Stihl PolyCut Head
Before moving on to the details of the process, let’s briefly talk about the structure, applications, and functions of the Stihl PolyCut head.
The Stihl PolyCut Head: An Overview
This trimmer head comes with three thermoplastic blades meant for trimming large areas and hard-to-reach places. These blades are placed on bushings and extend with an increase in the engine speed. Notably, you can also use the tool for intricate trimming work around solid structures such as monuments since the blades won’t mark the stone.
Speaking of its functions, the tap-and-go cutting head operates with the push of a trigger. And to feed more trimming lines into the head, you need only tap its bottom on the ground.
The Procedure
Here are four simple steps for removing the PolyCut head of a Stihl trimmer and installing new PolyCut nylon blades into the spool:
Step 1:
Release the trigger on the weed trimmer, then turn off the power switch and keep it on a flat area to let it cool completely. Now, remove the spark plug boot from the plug on top of its engine.
Step2:
Follow this by turning over the trimmer so that the cutting head points up. Then insert a flat-head screwdriver through the deflector holes on the head and a thrust plate under it. As a result, the shaft will lock in position to facilitate easy removal of the spool head.
Step 3:
Next, grasp the cutting head with one hand while supporting the shaft with the other, and unscrew the head counterclockwise. After it’s entirely unscrewed, you can lift it off the shaft quite easily.
Step 4:
Finally, align the hole with a PolyCut nylon blade, screw in the center of the trimmer shaft, and insert the blade on the shaft screw. Then secure the blade onto the shaft using a nut and an adjustable wrench. Once you’ve tightened the blades properly, remove the wrench and replace the spark plug boot.
Final Words
That’s about it for today. Hopefully, you’ll now find it much easier to detach the PolyCut head from your Stihl trimmer and can install new blades with ease. What’s more, the entire procedure is straightforward and will barely take you half an hour.
Before wrapping up, here’s a last piece of advice — if you need to replace the trimmer head, make sure to purchase a unit specifically designed for the model you own. That’s because Stihl manufactures a number of PolyCut heads, each suitable for a different set of models.
It’s time to bid goodbye for now. But stay tuned for more informative guides. Till then, take care!
