A weed eater is a gardener’s handiest tool for keeping their garden prim and proper.
However, if you plan on moving houses or storing the device in your garage, it could take up a lot of space. To avoid that, disassembling it is the best option, and knowing how to do it will also help you if any part needs to be replaced.
So, keep reading to know how to take apart a weed eater.
Step 1
Start by gathering the right tools for disassembling your weed eater safely and quickly. You’ll need the following:
- Small screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Adjustable Wrench
- Wiping cloth
Step 2
If the weed eater was in use, unplug it and allow the engine and other moving parts to cool down. First off, you need to remove the spool line from the device housing by pushing it, twisting, and pulling out the spool.
Step 3
Next, unscrew the retaining screws that attach the head to the weed eater and pull them out. Some pieces might need reverse-threading, so don’t get confused and loosen them accordingly.
Step 4
For loosening the head, you’ll have to pull the line spool out of it, so locate two small holes. One will be in the inner part and the other on the outer; put a small screwdriver inside these holes. Then, loosen the central nut using an adjustable wrench and remove the head.
Step 5
Remove the spool line from the trimmer base by firmly pulling the tap button; set it aside, or dispose of it when empty.
Step 6
A rubber boot covers the spark plug towards the engine end of the weed eater, so you’ll have to remove it. Once that’s done, you’ll see the spark plug; unscrew it and empty the gasoline chamber if you didn’t do it beforehand.
Step 7
Flip the air filter cover behind the starting cord and remove the air filter from the assembly. This is an optional step to save your air filter from jamming.
Removing fuel from the gas chamber beforehand is crucial to be on the safe side, especially if you plan on leaving your weed eater disassembled for more than six months. The gas will lose its flammability over this period, and you’ll anyway have to replace it before use.
