How To Tune Up A Ariens Compact 24 Snow Blower

No matter how rarely you use a snow blower, it is always wise to invest in it, especially if you live in a place with heavy snowfall.

Now, the thing about snow blowers is that they may not be used for the majority of the year but are of tremendous help at the right time. However, the lack of usage, especially during the summer months, means there will be a lot of maintenance to do.

A few days ago, an old friend of mine, Erine, came over for the first time. While I gave her the house tour, she noticed my Ariens compact 24 snow blower peacefully resting in the shed. We got chatting about snow blowers, and she surprised me by saying that she didn’t want one since it is not needed for the whole year.

And while I was taken aback, I also wondered how many people refrain from buying snow blowers only because they are apprehensive of maintaining them. So, after my long chat with Erine, I decided to put together a short guide on how to tune up a Ariens compact 24 snow blower

How Frequently Should You Tune These Machines?

Snow blowers, generators, and other seasonal equipment usually need to be maintained the most. These need to be serviced at least once a year to ensure that they work when the time comes. Failing to check the engine and filters can lead to clogs which will spoil the equipment permanently.

Tuning Up A Snow Blower

When actively using a snow blower at home, make sure to constantly keep a check on the oil level and change the oil after 25 uses. This will make tuning up a lot easier in the later months. Also, a general rule of thumb is to replace the spark plug once every year. Now, let’s move on to the steps for a fine tune-up.

1. Drain Fuel

One of the first things you will want to do is drain the old fuel. Make sure the snow blower is parked in an open space since you will be handling gasoline. The next thing you would want to do is disconnect the spark plug wire and empty the fuel tank. Don’t refill the tank yet; that happens right at the end.

Another crucial thing to check is the fuel line. It needs to be flexible and soft for the blower to run efficiently. In case it is cracked or broken, replace it with a new one

2. Replace Fuel Filter

While you’re checking the line and changing fuel, you will want to have a look at the filter as well. Since the snow blower would’ve been inactive for some time, there is a chance the filters are clogged due to dirty fuel. It is recommended to do this once a year at least.

This can be done at home if you’re a DIY kind of person, but I usually hire a professional to help out since it can get complicated.

3. Replace Spark Plug

This is quite an important thing to take care of. As I mentioned earlier, it must be done once every year to ensure the snow blower runs perfectly. In case you wish to do this yourself, here are some steps to follow:

Step 1:

Remove the old spark plug from the cylinder using a deep socket and a ratchet.

Step 2:

Look at the manual for the correct gap setting before inserting it in the gap gauge. If done right, there should be a slight resistance when pulling out.

Step 3:

The final step is to make sure the spark plug fits snugly into the cylinder. I recommend hand tightening it first and only then using a tool to tighten it further. Just remember not to over-tighten it since it can damage the cylinder head.

4. Change Oil and Lubricate Auger Shaft

Just like the spark plug, you will have to change the oil once every season. The oil keeps everything running smoothly, so naturally, old oil from last year will prevent that from happening. The next thing will be to lubricate the auger. This is a pretty straightforward process, as all you need to do is spray a coat of silicone lubricant.

You will have to remove the shear pins on the shaft beforehand and then spray it with an even coat. Check the pins for damage and replace them if needed; otherwise, reinstall them once the oil is sprayed.

5. Inspect And Grease Tires

No equipment can run smoothly without properly greasing everything. Clean and coat the axle of all the wheels with multipurpose grease so that it does not rust. Also, check the pressure in each tire.

6. Adjust And Lubricate

We are now reaching the end of the tune-up process. Here you will want to adjust the skid shoes to ensure it lifts the auger and protects it from damage. Adjust the skid shoes, so it fully touches the ground. You will also have to clean and lubricate all the drive controls and cables for a smoother drive.

Summing It Up

The final step in this process is to fill up the tank and give it a test run. You want to make sure it works smoothly before it gets to the heavy-duty work. It may not be as smooth as you hoped the first time around, so be prepared for more adjustments, especially with the handles.

This was just a brief overview that I gave to Erine to let her know that tuning a snowblower is not that hard. Plus, you can always ask for professional help.

A tip I shared with Erine, which I will share with you too, was to keep the snow blower covered when it’s not being used. This makes the tune-up process easier. On that note, I shall now bid adieu, but I will be back soon with many more tips and guides.

See you next time!
