Let's be honest, things made for kids do look cute, but it's often hard to find the right size.
I still remember how challenging it felt whenever I needed to shop for my toddlers. Recently, that feeling came back to me when my neighbor Kathy wanted help with buying a bike for her grandson. I'm a regular bike rider, but her request surprised me because I didn't really have a clue about how to choose a kid-sized bike.
After spending some time on the internet, I found out that it's best to take the kid to a bike shop to find the right fit. Yes, much like clothes, kids need to fit their bikes to have a smooth riding experience.
And, as Kathy managed to get a great bike for her grandson, I thought of doing a bit more research to create an informative guide on the topic. Hi! I'm Stacy Smith, and today I will tell you everything to answer your questions on “what size bike do I need for my child?”
Without further ado, let's begin.
How To Determine The Size Of A Bike For Your Child?
When it comes to buying an adult bike, the size is usually determined by the frame of the bike. However, in the case of bikes meant for kids, the wheel's diameter is used to specify the size. Kids’ bikes run between the sizes of 12-inch and 26-inch, though 10-inch models are also available from some companies.
Most bike manufacturers follow a basic size chart that classifies the size of the bike according to the child's age group. But, it isn't the best option to determine the right choice, as every child doesn't attain a similar height at a particular age.
Moreover, your child should be able to comfortably hold the handlebars when standing over the bike while their feet lie flat on the ground. Hence, measuring a child's inseam has turned out to be a better determinant for the right bike size.
Kathy and I did manage to get a bike from a nearby store, but you may need to shop online. So, make sure to measure the child's inseam, and then look up the chart specified by the bike manufacturer for the right match.
If the inseam isn't given, look for the stand-over height of the bike, and it should be at least an inch less than the child's inseam. This helps the child stand comfortably over the bike rather than their body resting on the top bar.
How To Measure The Child’s Inseam?

You might have come across the word "inseam" while purchasing trousers, and it can also simply be referred to as the inside-leg length. You'll need a pencil, a tape measure, and a hardcover book to measure your child's inseam.
First, make the child stand against the wall and place the book between their legs. The book should face spine up and lie at the very top of the child's inner thighs. Also, make sure that the child is wearing shoes while taking the measurements.
Once the book is sitting firmly between the child's legs, ensure that one edge of the book is touching the wall. Next, take a pencil and mark the highest point where the book meets the wall. Now, you'll only need to measure the distance between the mark and the floor to get the child's inseam.

Perfect Seat Height Of A Bike
Another crucial thing to note while choosing a bike for your child is the height of its seat. The seat height is usually adjustable, but still, you need to make sure that it's comfortable for your child.
If your kid is just starting out with riding, then the seat needs to be adjusted lower so that their feet can lie flat on the ground. This is especially true for small children, as they should be able to use their legs as a break.
With time, the child will gain confidence about sitting on the bike, and you can then adjust the seat height. For a beginner, the seat height should be equal to that of the child's inseam. But, if you're thinking about starting your child on training wheels, then a seat height of up to three inches above their inseam works well.
However, if the child is already confident with riding a bike, then you can go with a seat height where their tiptoes reach the ground. These riders will typically have more experience with steering and stopping their bikes. So, it's recommended to choose a seat size that's two to four inches more than the child's inseam. The added height also adds efficiency to pedaling.
Should You Go For A Larger Bike?

As a parent, I always worried that my children would soon grow out of their things. And, it did happen quite a few times, so I always had a tendency to grab a larger size, thinking that they would grow into it. I was surprised to learn that you should never make that mistake while choosing a bike for a child.
It's better to go down a size if your child is in-between inseam lengths. Having the right-size bike ensures comfort and better control, especially for first-time riders. A quick tip - look for a bike with a lower seat height matching your child's inseam length, so you can adjust it as the child grows.
And, even though every child has a unique growth rate, a bike lasts for two years on average. If you have multiple children, then this can work out better as smaller siblings can grow up and use the same bike. But, you can also look for trade-in options for getting a new bike for your child.
